Eligibility Criteria for Sponsors

To be eligible to sponsor a family member, you must:
– Be at least 18 years old – Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as a your country citizen under the Canadian Act
– Be living in Canada, or plan to return to Canada once your relative becomes a permanent resident
– Be able to financially support your sponsored family member and ensure they do not need social assistance from the government

You can sponsor:

– Your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner
– Your dependent children (including adopted children)
– Your parents and grandparents – In some cases, other relatives such as orphaned brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren under 18

Financial Requirements .

Sponsors must demonstrate they have enough income to support the family members they are sponsoring. This includes signing an undertaking to provide financial support for the sponsored family member for a specific period:
– Spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners: 3 years
– Dependent children: 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first
– Parents and grandparents: 20 years

Process

1. Determine Eligibility : Ensure both you and your family member meet the eligibility criteria.
2. Submit Application : Complete and submit the sponsorship application along with the necessary supporting documents and fees.
3. Processing : IRCC will process your application, which includes background checks and medical examinations for the sponsored family member.
4. Decision : IRCC will notify you of the decision. If approved, your family member will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can travel to Canada.

Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

If you are unable to sponsor your parents or grandparents for permanent residence, they may be eligible for a Super Visa. The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada for up to two years at a time with a 10-year multiple-entry visa.
