What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an electronic system that manages applications for skilled workers seeking Canadian permanent residence. It handles three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Candidates submit an online profile and, if eligible, enter a pool where they are ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranking candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

How does Express Entry work?

Express Entry involves two main stages: candidates express interest in obtaining permanent residence, and the government holds invitation rounds, selecting the highest-ranking candidates. There are general, program-specific, and category-based draws. Key steps include checking eligibility, completing language tests, submitting a profile, waiting for an ITA, and submitting an Application for Permanent Residence (APR) with required documents.

Targeted Express Entry draws

Category-based draws invite candidates eligible for specific categories aimed at meeting economic goals. Candidates must still meet the minimum CRS score for ITA.

Processing time

An Express Entry profile is valid for one year. After receiving an ITA, the government processes permanent residence applications within six months.

Pros and cons

Pros:

– Faster processing times compared to the old system.
– CRS points reflect factors that predict success in Canada’s job market.
– Regular draws provide multiple opportunities.

Cons:

– No guaranteed ITA even if eligible.

Costs

Submitting a profile is free, but candidates incur costs for language tests, Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), document translation, and potential legal fees. Government fees apply after receiving an ITA, including processing and permanent residence fees.

Hiring a lawyer

Hiring a lawyer is optional but can be beneficial for maximizing CRS points and navigating the process.

Job offer

A job offer is not required but can increase CRS points. Valid job offers must meet specific criteria and may require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

Success in Canada

Express Entry immigrants generally find good jobs, earn higher salaries, and have high employment rates due to their human capital characteristics.

Family inclusion

You can include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in your Express Entry application.

Eligibility

Candidates must meet the criteria of one of three programs: FSWP, CEC, or FSTP, each with specific requirements for work experience, language ability, and education.

Improving CRS score

Ways to improve your score include claiming all eligible points, improving language test scores, gaining more education and work experience, and obtaining a Canadian job offer or provincial nomination.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Provinces can nominate candidates who meet their economic needs. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, virtually guaranteeing an ITA.

Express Entry vs. PNP

Express Entry is a federal system, while PNPs are provincial. Both can lead to permanent residence, but a provincial nomination significantly boosts CRS scores.

Language test

Candidates need a certain Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level depending on the program. Higher language test scores can improve CRS points.

Job offers and LMIA

Valid job offers for Express Entry must meet specific criteria and often require an LMIA, except in certain exemptions.

Work in Canada

Current employment in Canada does not count as a job offer. A written job offer meeting specific criteria is required for CRS points.

Frequently Asked Queations

Express Entry is an online system used by the Canadian government to manage applications for permanent residence from skilled workers. It includes three economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

The Express Entry process involves creating an online profile where you provide details about your skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other personal information. If you meet the criteria, you are placed in a pool of candidates and ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Candidates with the highest scores receive invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.

The CRS is a points-based system used to assess and score your profile and rank you in the Express Entry pool. Points are awarded based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language skills, and additional factors like a job offer or a provincial nomination.

The PNP allows provinces and territories to nominate individuals who want to immigrate to Canada and settle in a particular province. Each province and territory has its own criteria for nomination. If you are nominated, you receive additional points under the CRS, significantly increasing your chances of receiving an ITA through Express Entry.

You can apply for a provincial nomination through the province or territory’s immigration program. Some PNPs are aligned with Express Entry, meaning you must first create an Express Entry profile. If a province or territory nominates you, you update your profile to include the nomination, boosting your CRS score.
